XIII (Thirteen) is a Franco-Belgian comics series written and illustrated by Belgian Jean Van Hamme and William Vance revolving around a character suffering from amnesia who tries to discover his hidden past. With its plot inspired by the book by Robert Ludlum's The Bourne Identity, [1] XIII was originally serialized in Spirou in 1984, and was subsequently published by Dargaud. In 2003, the history of the first five volumes was adapted into a video game, also titled XIII, which was published on multiple platforms. A television series starring Val Kilmer and XIII Stephen Dorff was published in 2008.
Only the first three volumes have been translated into English in the first run in 1989 by Catalan Communications. In 2005, Alias Comics started publishing it as a comic published monthly for an American audience, but stopped after five issues. In 2007, Dabel Brothers Productions in association with Marvel Comics has published a Volume XIII uncensored 1 TP collect the first three albums, and previously No. 6 Released online for free. [2] The titles below are English translations of the original titles, and can change for the actual album, if and when they are released in English.

[Edit] Synopsis
XIII chronicles the adventures of a man nicknamed "XIII" with memory loss who is looking for his past, and a group of his friends try to unravel the mystery of his identity, which is embroiled in conspiracies, secrets, and the killers are to murder.

The series begins with a man stranded on a shore of the bay Peacock on the East Coast of the United States, suffering from amnesia, and just the tattoo "XIII" on his collarbone to link to its past. Volumes one to five deal with "XIII" in search of his identity and his past, to be confronted with the "conspiracy of the XX" which is a blow State of the United States. They form an arc of the story closed, ending the destruction of the "XX".
In the first volume, XIII washes ashore and finds himself hunted by assassins for reasons unknown to him. He managed to elude them and collect a photograph of himself with a woman, developed by a photography studio in the city of Eastown. Eastown leaves league, where he identifies the woman in the photo of Kim Rowland, widow U.S. Army Capt. Steve Rowland. Go to the address of Kim Rowland, XIII is a hidden message left by Kim saying that someone nicknamed " Mongoose "has found its mark and it will wait XIII" where does the Indian. In the second volume XIII search for Kim Rowland led to his capture by the army of General Carrington, who identifies himself as Steve Rowland XIII, the husband of Kim Rowland and former member of a special operations unit called SPADs (Special Assault and destruction of sections) Carrington has created and controlled when Rowland was killed in a helicopter crash two years ago. "Rowland" returned to his home, using Southbourg by Carrington, Lieutenant Jones. While his father, Jeremy Rowland, a wealthy landowner Earth, and other parents expressed no doubt about his identity, XIII is disappointed not to find Kim there. Amos comes to the meeting and still holds XIII him as his main suspect that his fingerprints were found on the sniper rifle that fired the President Sheridan. But as amnesia prevents XIII to be of no use to find who ordered the murder of Sheridan, Amos XIII can fetch Rowland Kim because she cache, it thinks it knows something important. XIII finally manages to find "where is the Indian", but he is deceived by Felicity Jeremie Rowland young woman. Felicity kills Jeremie Rowland and Steve's uncle Matt, involving XIII for the murders in order to inherit the fortune of Jeremy. XIII escapes However the police to assist the Carrington and Lieutenant Jones, and met with Kim in his hiding place. Kim tells her she is tattooed as well, bringing the number Tattoo XVII, XIII she does not know real name, which is actually Steve Rowland. Colonel Amos Carrington applications help identify people who have received advanced training for Special Operations and the physical mounting XIII, in order to discover the true identity of XIII. Carrington provides papers about twenty people, one of them, a Tanner Ross, has been missing for two years. Amos XIII decided to leave the prison to have on hand and treated to disrupt his amnesia. The treatment fails and the Mongoose tries to have killed XIII in prison. To escape killer Mongoose, XIII an escape attempt that fails, but Carrington and Jones reached into small groups to XIII.
Volume Four begins by Colonel Amos conclusion that Carrington has invented identity Tanner and suspected of being part of the conspiracy to assassinate President Sheridan. XIII, under the name of Ross Tanner, was hidden by Carrington training center SPADs in the fictional country of San Miguel. Continuing his check file, Colonel Amos notes that in the tomb of an airplane Jason was actually the real body of Captain Steve Rowland, not killed in helicopter crash Two years before, but with bullets in a short time after the assassination of President Sheridan. Assuming now that Rowland was the real killer, Amos is confused about the real role XIII, but exposes the judge Allenby, who has already identified a single body in the helicopter crash that that of Rowland and is now head of the investigation as one of the conspirators, the port number of the VI. Amos asks Allenby name number of I of the conspiracy, but Allenby was killed by a killer mongoose is about to kill Amos when he was shot Kim Rowland. Kim Rowland Amos FBI Director Carl Heidegger and General Carrington, who revealed that after his death, faking accident Helicopter Steve Rowland contacted his wife Kim and he was a member of the conspiracy. Sheridan helps XIII infiltrate the center of military operations, and the President Galbrain they manage to stop the conspiracy at the last moment. The entire conspiracy, with the exception of the famous Number I, has been killed or captured. Walter Sheridan was elected president. Kim Rowland is still missing for unknown reasons. At the end of the story arc believed XIII he found his identity as old Jason Fly, and is willing to continue his life normally, even if his memories are not yet returned.

In the following volumes XIII resumed the investigation into her past. Volumes Six and Seven to Greenfalls XIII, a city snow in the Rocky Mountains, where the story revolves around the fate of his father in the McCarthian 1950. XIII learns that his father, Jonathan Fly, has murdered by the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan, after discovering the true identity of Fly was Jonathan Mac Lane, a "red" journalist who had to flee after suffering under McCarthy witch hunts. The mongoose tracks still XIII with the blessing of the assassins Jonathan MacLane, but escapes the manhunt XIII, obtain justice for the murder of his father and managed to stop the Mongoose, who reveals that he was I ship on the number when he fired the bullet that was amnesiac XIII, but no further information on Number I. The story ends with a good idea that has finally found his true identity as Jason Mac Lane.
In volume eight, XIII is introduced by President Sheridan to become a special agent, loaded with the conclusion of the number still at large I. The mongoose is subtracted from the guard. XIII finally faces Walter Sheridan, exposed under the number I, but XIII is no evidence or testimony against him. Sheridan will not try to assassinate XIII to avoid a new investigation that could lead to exposing, and XIII and Jones to leave the country.

In the following volumes of the action takes place in and around the Costa Verde, a small imaginary country in Central America where XIII is led to believe that he drove once a revolution under the identity of "El Cascador", while El Cascador is supposed to be dead. XIII is involved with revolutionary Maria de los Santos, who claims to have been his wife. During the episode 10, after his release from prison where she was awaiting execution, she confirmed to be her husband.
During the XIII revolution met Sean Mullway Irish-American expat, who claims be the true father of XIII. However, it also confirms the identity of XIII Jason Lane that Mac. The history of Irish XIII is revealed and XIII learns that his mother was the sister of Giordino, who accidentally killed her. The Giordino proved to be a mafia family. At the end of the volume XIII is offered amnesty by the U.S. ambassador, who said that the aid is necessary XIII: Carrington has apparently lost his mind.
In twelve volumes XIII Corruption U.S. President Sheridan is kidnapped by General Carrington, who has learned that Sheridan has ordered the death of his daughter Kim. Carrington Amos and XIII and Jones enter the mongoose to obtain additional evidence against Sheridan. In a televised "trial" Sheridan is revealed the American public that the conspirator with XIII and mongoose testify. In the aftermath of the event NSA Director Giordino accidentally kills Sheridan after Sheridan killed the mongoose.
Volume thirteen (XIII) is a particular issue, where two journalists retrace the first twelve numbers clarifying and extending the timeline.

While in exile in Costa Verde, XIII and his father decide to try Mullway to find a treasure hidden somewhere in Mexico by their ancestors. Giordino, meanwhile, the evidence reveals manufactures XIII, Seamus O'Neill, an operator IRA was formed under Fidel Castro. Like O'Neill, XIII is wanted by the United States, but managed to escape again. He also survived an assassination by Irina Svetlanova, who took over the operation Mongoose. After many setbacks the treasure is found, then lost again. During Giordino this time is finally removed from office by the new President, who has received testimony from XIII and Mullway Giordino revealing that not only connected the Mafia, but also as the murderer of Walter Sheridan's true.
eighteen and nineteen volumes are the latest albums written by Van Hamme. The eighteen Volume Irish version was designed by Jean Giraud, known as Moebius. [3] He figures as a story within a story, and it refers as part of the plot in nineteen volumes The Last Round. This story is the prequel to the initial story arc, and has solved all the mysteries surrounding the identity of XIII.

First released in 1984, serialized in the popular Belgian magazine Spirou, XIII was an instant hit with readers of Spirou. The first three episodes have been published in a single bound volume by Dargaud the same year, a trend continued for the questions later. At the time of the eighth edition, a thirteen cons, sales Hardback had reached the 140,000 copies, and the publisher belatedly realized they had a bestseller on his hands. Promotion began, including a special drawing by the French national lottery in 2000 with 1.5 million tickets and a prize of € 13,000 Grand.

Also published in Spirou was the detective series of soda on a New York City. An adventure published in 1999, God Only salt (only God knows), also hold the character losing his memory, but for a short time. References to the number "13" and other connections to the series appear throughout history.
The black cat manga, published in 2000, has many similarities with XIII. The main character, Train Heartnet, is known as Chronos Number XIII in his work as sweeper or murderer. Train fails a mission to the identity-as Bourne fashion, winds conflict with Chronos, and must stop a vast conspiracy.

Initially French, XIII was simultaneously translated into Dutch, and translations into other languages like German, Polish and Italy soon followed.

- In 1989, XIII was first published in English Code XIII, but after the first three volumes, published in 1990 ended when the publisher (Catalan / ComCat) closed its doors.
- In 2005, Alias Comics started publishing the title of a series of comics published 32 pages per month for an American audience. Five questions been released, but # 6 was "canceled by the publisher" in February 2006. [4] Each issue covered half a album.
- In 2006, the Dabel Brothers Productions series of. They published online # 6 for free, and the first volume of 144 pages has published 7 February 2007, Marvel Comics, reprinting the first 3 albums.
- Cinebook were selected for release the entire series in English, and plans to publish the full 19 pounds at a rate of one every two months, from August 2010. [5]

- In 1988, XIII began publication in Portugal Meribérica-Liber. The first three volumes were published over a period of two years, and the series returns in 1997 with the fourth album after a hiatus of seven years. Meribérica published the first nine albums until it went bankrupt in 2004.
- In 1990, the Portuguese newspaper Publico (Portugal) has started XIII published in its Sunday supplement "Publico Junior '. Finally, the first 3 books were published in this way before of "Publico Junior" was dropped in 1992.
- In 2006, XIII is published in Brazil by Panini Comics. [6] Panini Releases XIII, a monthly series with two episodes in each issue. Previously available in Brazil were published in Portuguese editions by Meribérica-Liber.
The first issue is the Day of Black Sun was called O Dia do Sol Negro, translation literal. The first issue also included a second episode, called Onde Vai o Indio … (When Walking Indian), published in May 2006. All questions are composed of Brazil's two albums, except for number 7, which includes the original volume thirteenth, a double album-enterprises alone.

Jean Van Hamme said he will not continue writing the series, but William Vance is interested in continuing it with another writer. Yves Sente, which has already supported the writing of Thorgal Van Hamme, is interested in continuing the series. He was contacted by William Vance and said he had to propose a story Van Hamme, but no agreement has yet been reached [9].

A cartoon series XIII Mystery called, which monitors and develops the secondary characters of the comic book series XIII, started by the publisher Dargaud October 3, 2008, with the publication of the first issue, mongoose [10]. On October 30, 2009, the second question, Irina, was published [11].
